In Remembrance and in Memoriam: A Pastor-Poet's Tribute to 9-11

by Rev. Greg Asimakoupoulos

Twenty-four months ago terror showed up unannounced. It didn't call ahead. And because it didn't, when we opened the door to see who was there, we discovered three thousand were dead. Instead of business as usual, Wall Street closed. A street without walls took stock in what really matters. Precious metals lacked their normal luster when compared to precious lives. When the Big Apple was shaken to the core by jet-size bullets, the entire nation quaked. Caught off guard, Americans didn't fake courage. Patriotic hearts beat as one but raced in fear. Seizing whatever faith we had, we fell to our knees. We could tell that pledging allegiance to the flag could not take the place of calling out to God.

"It was a day that proved that those who live in the land of the free and the home of the brave know how to behave when push comes to shove and terror comes to stay. We pray. But only then? The 11th of September calls us to remember (and understand) that a nation can only be indivisible under God. We can't just fly a flag. We have to fold our hands. Suffice it to say, we've been called to pray. Not just when terror rings the bell. But every single day."

Liberty Never Blinks

With big sad eyes that never close
she watched those black clouds as they rose
eclipsing New Yorkšs brilliant sun
as shadows signaled doom.

Unflinchingly she stared and wept
as towers fell and terror swept
across a city unaware
that held its breath and prayed.

With torch in hand she offered light
to those who searched both day and night
for missing loved ones lost beneath
a mountain of debris.

She stood for hope when hope seemed lost
as rescue workers paid the cost
of burying our broken dreams
that died that dreadful day.

She stood by guarding while we grieved
and heard us say why we believed
that we must seek out terrorists
before they strike again.

And still she stands defiant, strong
unfazed by those whošve done us wrong.
And those who try to stare her down
will find she never blinks.

Ground Zero Faith

When it seems you've been blindsided
and you crumble from within,
let the Lord be your strong tower.
He will shield you once again.
When it seems like God is missing
and your faith cannot be found.
don't suspend your search as useless.
Where you are is holy ground.
When the Enemy attacks you
and your will to trust gives way,
don't just stand there in the rubble.
Humbly kneel and start to pray.
When your dreams lie in the ashes
and your confidence is gone,
don't despair about the future.
By God's grace you can go on.

Let's Hear It For Our Heroes

Let's hear it for our heroes
for firemen and cops
for those who live at risk each day
that terror might be stopped.
A wife who got a phone call
from Tower Number Two
who heard her husband say "Goodbye!"
and "Darling, I love you!"
Commander Dan Shanower
who grew up where we live
who died inside the Pentagon
with so much more to give.
A boyish man named Beamer
and other daring souls
who fought their captors in the sky
as Todd called out "Let's roll!"
A mayor known as Rudy
who searched for those who died
who roamed Manhattan day and night
and held Her as She cried.
A preacher we call Billy
now old with trembling hands
who stood in a Cathedral
to say God understands.
A nation of survivors
united by a cause
who perseveres in search of peace
in spite of fears or flaws.
Let's hear it for our heroes
those living and those gone
who bravely did what duty asked
that freedom might live on.

A Prayer to Father God for Mother Liberty

As Mother Liberty looked on in horror,
she witnessed a nightmare that will forever challenge
the dream for which she proudly stands.
Without warning, twins she bravely birthed collapsed at her feet.
Symbols of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
(and thousands who cherished them) perished.
What had towered for years above the Big Apple without trouble
became a smoldering mess of rubble.
But it wasn't just a city shaken to the core. Our entire nation quaked.
Two hundred and twenty stories of capitalism's success,
(once an anthology of corporate commerce and trade)
are but ancient history now.
What stood tall early that Tuesday morning is forver gone.
So too the light that once twinkled
in innocent eyes that looked on in disbelief.
The skies above Manhattan billowed with black smoke.
while the earth beneath became an eery sight.
It was unthinkable and unbelievable.
It was unmistakably the act of ungodly beasts
who would undeniably admit
to a sense of pleasure derived from attempts to undermine
the treasure of freedom many of us have taken for granted.
O God, rouse us from our routine slumber.
Teach us to number our days. To confess our sin
and once again recognize our dependence on You.
Teach us to eschew our complacency and apathy,
and to rethink our false sense of national security.
Teach us to repent of values we have come to confess as a nation
that violate Your holiness and mock Your gifts of grace.
O Lord, as we admit our vulnerability this day,
be with those whose grief and loss is greater than they can say.
We pray that You would guide our President and leaders,
that You would purge our sin and protect our land.
Father God, please stand by Mother Liberty,
so that the torch she holds forth
will continue to flame with the promise of freedom and hope.
May she illuminate our feet as we attempt to walk in Your ways
to a place where once again the phrase on our money
actually describes the ways and the means of our lives.
"In God We Trust" Amen.
