Losing a little bird out of the nest can be quite traumatic, as I recently discovered. No more must I say to the little bird who thinks he's a big bird, "Clean that messy room, pick up those books and papers, straighten those videos, etc., etc., etc." His room is empty, the bed is made, the trophies gathering dust, his brother has become "an only child"--and Mom has no idea who SHE is....for her "little boy" is gone, and in his place is this so-called grown-up 18-year-old collegiate who flies into freedom without even looking back--except when funds for flying get a little low, of course!
Now THAT'S an adjustment especially for moms, and I suppose, like all moms from here back to eternity, I'll make it too...and learn how to enjoy empty nest living (so they tell me!). In the meantime, back at the ranch, I mean, the NEST, you and I and everyone else you know, must learn how to live right IN that nest...whether it's two roommates, a husband and wife, a traditional family, a blended family....or if it's just YOU, you have to learn how to live with YOURSELF too--so we're all included!
HOW in the world do I live IN the nest with all these people of all these varying ages, personalities, moods, likes and dislikes--and keep my sanity, my sanctity, and my sainthood? With GREAT care--and only with God's help! He's got to be the LORD of the nest--and that's the only way we will truly make it! We will communicate, we will show compassion, and we will be concerned for one another--only as HE is in control.
Who's Lord of your nest today? Don't fly away in frustration and failure...Stay where you belong--close to the Lord of the nest who's got all the right answers for everything that is wrong in your sticks-and-feathers abode. He knows how to mend, how to blend, and how to send you all the love, joy and peace your nest can hold. It's called the Fruit of the Spirit and it's for you and your family too. Ask Him to be Lord of your nest--you'll be so glad you did!

There's misunderstandings, angry words, thoughtless actions, silent resentments--and the nest can get pretty uncomfortable. You're not Lord of the nest--and it shows! Lord, help me. Change me first--and then let me see how You will change the hearts of those with whom I live too. You're a family relations specialist--and I need Your services, In Jesus' Name, Amen."
