"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine... (Proverbs 17:22)."
"A Week's Worth of Worry--No-Fail Prescription!"
By Guest Writer, Joy Jacobs
Day 1
Do not be calm about anything, but in everything, with worry and murmuring and lack of gratefulness for the good things God has given you, express fear and doubt in God's promises to others.
And the captivity of satan, which spreads to all areas of your life, will fill your heart and mind. (Philippians 4:6-7, Jacobs nega-phrase)
"Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when God displaces worry at the center of your life" (The Message)
Day 2
Allow yourself, along with the rest of the world, to be terrorized by sons of Ishmael who fly planes into towers and 63-year-old school bus drivers who've gone wacko. Don't waste your time putting on the whole armor of God -- the protection God has planned and provided for you -- to arm yourself for a spiritual war against Satan.
"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28)
"Don't be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There's nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life -- body and soul -- in His hands." (Message)
Day 3
To come off strong when you're really feeling fearful, watch lots of WWF wrestling. Take notes and adopt Andre the Giant's best moves.
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might ... for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places...." (Ephesians 6:12).
"God is strong, and He wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels." (Message)
Day 4
When someone tries to intimidate you, don't stand for it! Find an excuse, even if you have to tell a white lie, to go elsewhere. Or else tell him off -- just haul off and kick him in the teeth.
"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." (Ephesians 5:14)
"Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet." (Message)
Day 5
Take your Palm Pilot and your Walkman with you at all times so you can block out undesirable distractions from what you have designated as your focus for the day.
"Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying always ... and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints." (Ephesians 5:17-18)
"Truth, righteousness, peace, faith and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You'll need them through out your life. God's Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes (and ears) open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out." (Message)
Day 6
Avoid eating pretzels -- hard or soft or Auntie Anne's -- or any related foods so that, unlike President Bush, you don't take a chance on passing out and missing an update on the most recent suicide bombing.
"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear" (Luke 21:25-26)
"It will seem like all hell has broken loose -- sun, moon, stars, earth, sea, in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be quaking" (The Message)
Day 7
Keep TV / radio / Internet on at full blast at all times so that you are aware of the latest on food and fashion -- as well as the latest fright-full observations and fear-full suggestions the media has to offer. Spend all your time and extra money stashing staples and gallons of water in your basement.
"But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." (Luke 12:31-32)
"What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, not be so preoccupied with getting so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way He works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how He works.
"Steep yourself in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions." (Message)

Here's a word--or two--from Joy!
I've been a Christian since I was a pre-schooler. I had a godly, praying mother and a dad who spoke in churches. I graduated from a Christian college and attended seminary. My husband Bob has been in ministry since 1962. All three of our sons are in ministry. I've written several books on women and couples of the Bible, as well as co-authoring "Single, Whole & Holy: Christian Women & Sexuality."
But ... in the home where I grew up, anger, depression, and fear caused confusion in my heart that followed me through years of my life. My book "When God Seems Far Away" arose out of a lot of questions, which God began to answer through the meanings of His name.
At this point in my life, I don't want to take a chance of passing on patterns of fear and worry to my children or grandchildren. My goal is complete liberty in Christ! Recently, I've found the workbook "Breaking Free" (Beth Moore) to be very helpful. In the chapter "Removing the Obstacles," Beth asks readers to paraphrase Philippians 4:6-7 from a negative standpoint. That got me started! Thanks, Joy, for this attention-getting message to all of us!
