A person belonging to an ethnic group whose members are commonly considered to have certain stereotypical mannerisms met another person belonging to a different ethnic group with a different set of imputed stereotypical mannerisms. The first person acted in a manner consistent with the stereotypes associated with his ethnic group, and proceeded to make a remark which might be considered to establish conclusively his membership in that group, whereupon his companion proceeded to make a remark with a double meaning, the first meaning of which could be interpreted to indicate his agreement with his companion, but the other meaning of which serves to corroborate his membership in his particular ethnic group.
Of course, the first person took offense at his remark, and reacted in a stereotypical way!

Today's Truth: "Cast Your Vote!"

"Cast Your Vote"
-----------------------------
At the end of his famous Gettysburg Address in 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, "...this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." With those words, President Lincoln described what makes the United States of America so unique. Citizens participate freely in the political process in a land free from tyranny and oppression. Individuals like you and me are empowered to give direction to local, state, and national policies. Our involvement determines who will assume places of leadership at all levels of government and how we as a nation will handle issues at home and abroad. Indeed, we are a government of the people, by the people, for the people. This will remain so, however, only as long as we continue to take our place in the process.
While the Assemblies of God does not endorse any particular government or political party, we do recognize that civil government is ordained by God and should be supported by all citizens, including Christians. "The authorities that exist have been established by God," Paul wrote in Romans 13:1. He indicated that they are there to do us good and that they are His servants. As such they deserve our support.
We support elected officials with our votes and our prayers. Even if we are not pleased with the officials that are elected, we are to pray for them. Paul instructed that "requests, prayer, and intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" (1 Timothy 2:2).
At the voting booth on Tuesday, November 5, you will have opportunity to vote for your candidates of choice. You will encounter a variety of propositions and other issues that touch many areas of life. Being informed about the candidates as well as the issues will help you vote intelligently and responsibly. Take time to listen and read. Make your votes a matter of prayer. Ask God to direct you.
Although many ills plague our land, there is no other nation on the face of the earth like the United States of America. We enjoy many wonderful liberties and privileges. That is due, in large measure, to our participatory form of government and the influence of godly and moral people who have taken their places in the political processes. Many have determined to make a difference where they can.
Take your place at the polls this Tuesday for the honor of God and country.
Your brother in Christ,
Thomas Trask
General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God.
