Are you hurting? Then you've come to the right place--the place where long ago a woman from Samaria found help and healing. From human answers? No--from the One Who IS the Answer! Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, awaits us all at the Well today--come with me, and let's meet Him there!
Peek with me into our family memory book for a hilarious walk-on-water story! Our son Joey, ONCE a two-year-old, decided in a moment of inspiration to pour water all over my kitchen floor--not to be ornery, I'm sure, but actually to roleplay a Bible story...I discovered it just in time to hear this little toddler's voice and watch his wet little feet splash through the water, as he gleefully sang, "Here comes Jesus, walkin' on the water..." I had a mess, but what a marvelous moment--Sunday School does pay off (uh...as long as they warn you that interactivity in the home may require some extra mopping-up afterward!!)Last weekend, in a series of unbelievably, exciting events in my own life, I found myself re-living with Peter the walk-on-water scene from Bible days. In my mind's eye, I could see him taking the first step out of the boat. I could see the Master standing on the water, hand outstretched, saying, "Come!" A supernatural adventure, only made possible because of the Master's call. The stormy sea still raged beneath Peter's feet, but as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked on water--a REAL sea, a REAL saint, and a REAL Savior...and therein lies the miracle. Want to walk on water? You CAN--when the Savior calls. Come to the well and let's listen for His call.
Peter the fisherman was well aware of the real sea. He had fished in it many times, and was well versed in its tempermental ways. But this was different! Jesus, God's Son, was asking him to WALK on that sea...how ridiculous, UNLESS it was truly Jesus calling him. And it was--and he DID--walk on water, that is. A miraculous feat...and what a pun...for as his feet touched the water, he became part of a miracle we read about in our Bibles today. The sea of life is very real...and very treacherous. Without Jesus' call, we sink. With Jesus' call, we walk...and it is up to us. If we will keep our eyes on the Master, we will move through the impossible sea with feet as light as a feather. Why? Because HE has called us, and HIS power will take us, across the sea, atop the waves, in an awesome display of the power of God. Want to know the power of God in your life? Then listen for His call, look to him, and leap out of that boat--you too will walk on water, and God will be praised!
Peter was a saint! An IMPERFECT saint? You'd better believe it--we've read the stories of his adventures and misadventures as he followed the Lord. Peter loved the Lord, Peter failed the Lord, but Peter followed the Lord. Wherever He called, Peter eventually went. Sometimes it was a round-about route, but his heart knew the Savior's voice, and it resounded above all the voices of the world. It called him to a higher place--a place of real adventure, for who but the Lord knows how to make real adventures out of the commonplace events of our lives! Peter surely did not expect to be walking on water when he got into the boat that day! But real saints are like that--they simply obey the Lord. Scared? I'm sure Peter was scared. Would you be? I'd be petrified...but let's remember, God's call is God's enabling. And real saints obey!
Are you sure? REAL people don't walk on water--or do they? Jesus, Son of God, could walk on whatever He chose, and you can too, if He's called you! For He IS the omnipotent, miracle-working Savior. He is not a figment of our imagination, an imaginary character in our favorite fairy tale book--He's real, and He's GOD. When Peter recognized the true voice of His Lord, he moved out of the boat, and onto the water. And as LONG as he kept his eyes on the real Savior, he did really well...I don't fault him for taking a fall....I applaud him for taking a real step, out of a real boat, across the real water to a very real Savior.A very REAL Savior calls YOU to step out of the boat, and you can do it--in His strength, in His call, and for His praise. The miracle of the water-walk is not the man who did it; it's the Master who arranged it. And that same Master bids you walk on water--not for your own glory, but for His! With "fear and trembling," but with trust in Him, take that first step, and He'll take you the rest of the way, walking on water wherever He leads. For He is God and His command to "come" is His enabling to "go!"
Walk on water? On a real sea? Yes--when you're a real saint who's heard the call of a real Savior. You can do it, in His might--however impossible the task, for if He's called you, He will help you. Believe it, step out of that boat, and walk on water--at HIS command! Unbelievable? Of course, but our God is known to do unbelievable things--and walkin' on water is a breeze--to HIM! Enjoy the walk--He's waiting, watching, and working--what a Savior, what a Lord!
