I am a news junkie--so if you hand me a TV remote, I'm a happy woman. I can flip news channels back and forth to my heart's delight--and I can hang on to that bit of power I hold so tightly in my hand! Now everyone in my family does not have the same intensity of interest in the news as I do, which makes for an interesting juggle of that precious remote--sometimes I win, sometimes I lose.
One day I lost. I was in a dental waiting room, as taxi driver for my son, who was "happily" sitting in the dentist's chair while Mom had the remote in the waiting room - no one else was there--and I could watch the news--naturally!! It was almost like being in heaven to have a minute to sit and actually watch news in my busy day--and then, I was called into the inner chamber to consult with the dentist.
I did my thing, returned to the waiting room, only to find, to my GREAT dismay, that another family had come in, had taken over the remote, and CARTOONS were now on the screen! From CARTOONS we moved to Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy....I was delighted, of course...grin....no, GROAN!!
Now I was polite, sat and watched Miss Piggy without saying a word...but yikes! I had lost control of that treasured remote. I spent the rest of that waiting room time in a bit of quiet frustration--but THAT'S where I got this devotional, so all was not lost! (And, by the way, when we ALL lose the remote at OUR house, I NEED a devotional to get through the trauma of it all--until that precious remote is found once again!)
How we love to control our own lives--who we are, what we do, where we go. We hold onto the remote, willful in our own ways, deliberate in our own designs--and downright afraid to surrender. We flip the channels of life--fun, family, friends and more. We LIKE being in control--what power, what INCREDIBLE power! And then beyond the din of whatever's happening on that screen, we hear deep within, a still, small voice, "Hand ME the remote! Let Me control your life--from My throne and within your heart." What power--what AWESOME power! The remote slips out of my hand and into His. I am His to command--as long as HE holds the remote!
